Welcome
I am Hunter T. Carter, a partner in the New York City office of the law firm Arent Fox LLP. Here’s my firm bio. I handle international arbitration (as counsel and as arbitrator), litgation, and investigations, in corporate and commercial matters for clients in a wide range of industries. Together with my partners who are experts in other areas, I also manage multi-disciplinary engagements on matters such as corporate transactions, bankruptcy, and regulatory affairs. I do a lot of pro bono work on human rights, especially marriage equality, as well as anti-corruption and anti-torture. I have a particular passion for Colombia and all of Latin America.
This site is a place where I share a bit about myself and my activities, research, and analyses as well as news that interests me about developments in international law, business, human rights, and more. (Please see disclaimers.)

WorldSmart Podcasts
Malcolm McNeil and I co-chair our firm’s AF International practice group, and we have launched a podcast called WorldSmart, featuring friendly smart conversations wiht partners and friends focused on the law of international business.
Check out the latest WorldSmart pod, a conversation with London’s Peters & Peters Partners Keith Oliver, Head of International, and Michael O’Kane, Head of Business Crime, to discuss the effects of covid in the international world of white collar crime and fraud recovery. We had a wide-ranging conversation about investigations and defense in the global compliance space. They had great insights on the UK Serious Fraud Office and tools like cooperation agreements, the limits of litigating by Zoom, unintended consequences from transparency initiatives, and whither crypto currencies. Give it a listen!
Our first interview was with Bill Ordower, who recently joined our firm after many years as General Counsel of Major League Soccer in the United States. Bill helped us to learn more about the sophisticated legal and business side of football (soccer). Most recently we learned from Tony Aguilera about his challenges as the Chief Legal Officer of ESI, an international supply chain and consumer products business.
We had a really lively discussion with special guests Jose Ugaz and Walfrido Warde about anti-corruption efforts in Latin America. Both are attorneys leading private law firms, Jose in Peru and Walfrido in Brazil. Both are published authors and both are active in non-profits and advocacy groups. They each spoke with passion about the importance of improving the anti-corruption regime and the tools used to fight corruption.
Our friend and Managing Partner, Cristina Carvalho, an expert in global branding and trademark strategies, talked to us about being the first Latina to manage a top 200 law firm, rising to the challenge of Covid with compassion, and in focusing on industry sectors to respond to client needs.
New Domain Name
Many years ago, I started this site with the name “Colombia Law & Business Post” (www.colombialawbiz.com) to post news and views about law and business in Colombia. Now, reflecting my expanded activities, the site will continue under my name, and focusing on a wider range of subject matter in international law and business, like international arbitration and investigations, and on many more markets in Latin America.
